What is high oil pressure Causes, Symptoms & repairs
The most essential component of an engine to run smoothly is engine oil, your vehicle engine oil pressure or high oil pressure is the most important and one of the things which needs to be perfect, if it’s too low or too high It can create many other problems, if your car high oil pressure indication is on it means something wrong is going on in engine pathways and it’s not properly lubricating the engine.
The oil and filter in a car can develop high oil pressure over time, so it’s important to check them every once in a while and clean out any debris that could prevent them from working correctly. There can be other factors that can cause high oil pressure, outdoorstuf team after several experiences come up with the causes of high oil pressure, what cause them, and remedies to fix it.
What Is High Oil Pressure?
Every engine has an oil passage from where engine oil passes through the engine and keeps it lubricated, oil pressure is measured by the resistance oil faces when it passed through the passage, it is determined by the oil pressure gauge which shows value after approx. 20 minutes of engine start as this is the time engine reaches optimum operating temperature.
As technology advances engines in the car also come with lots of variants like internal combustion, and hybrid engines, but generally optimum oil pressure is between 25-65 PSI depending on car brand engine size, and model, this optimum level is required for any engine for oil to reach to all components of the engine and runs it smoothly.
If the oil pressure reading is above the optimum PSI range it is usually considered to be the loo high or too low, factors like engine size diameter and bores along with engine oil viscosity cause an impact on oil pressure .
Generally, PSI above 80 is considered to be High, a high PSI indicated that the oil is not properly reaching to engine its bore, and other parts of the engine, Non-lubricated engine can seriously damage the engine performance and increase friction in the engine and sometimes can cause engine failure.
What Is Low Oil Pressure?
If the engine faces low oil pressure it means the oil which needs to lubricate the engine components is not properly able to reach and causes low oil pressure, the lack of lubrication can harm your engine’s performance.
What is Normal Oil pressure?
Normal oil pressure is when the Oil PSI level is in between optimal level which is 25-65 PSI and the contraption oil is smoothly running and lubricating the engine.
What Are The Causes Of elevated Oil Pressure?
1.Malfunction in Oil pressure Sending Unit.
The oil pressure sender measures the oil pressure and indicates the oil pressure gauge in the dashboard, once the ignition is on after a long it’s normal that the oil pressure sending unit shows a high reading, if the oil pressure continues to show high reading even after 20 minutes and the engine has a warm-up, either oil gauge is faulty at this you check to diagnose engine oil pressure by Manual oil pressure tester either at home or by a mechanic.
2. Contaminated and Dirty Oil Filter.
An oil filter is used to purify oil from any impurities over the period after usage, oil filter gets dirty from dust, derbies, and particle and the oil filter start begin clogging, once the engine oil didn’t pass properly from the filter it cause more resistance and high oil pressure.
3. Blocked Passage.
Once the oils passed by the oil filter, then it goes through a series of passages to the crankshaft, if the passage becomes blocked, oil couldn’t pass properly through the passage causing more resistance and high oil pressure.
4. Malfunction of relief Valve.
The objective of a relief valve is to supply a place for the oil to float when the pressure gets elevated. Usually, these valves are designed to open and allow oil through once the pressure gets to a certain level of PSI. If the relief valve undergoes a malfunction, the oil pressure can quickly rise to a level that is not safe for the engine.
5. Oil quality and viscosity.
The engine Oil you are using on the engine also plays a vital role, if engine oil viscosity is high it forces more resistance while passing through the engine passage, changing engine oil viscosity to thicker or thinner also causes an impact on oil pressure.
If the oil is more viscous or non-viscous can also impact your engine performance, always check the manufacturer’s viscosity level when buying any vehicle, every vehicle has its oil level, and optimal temperature and one must consider viscosity and engine oil temperature before changing engine oil for best performance .
It is recommended to wait for at least 20 minutes after the engine starts then check the oil pressure gauge for accurate PSI readings.
